New proposals are being put forward to bring 'death by dangerous driving' in line with manslaughter.
The new proposals include death caused by mobile phone use in a vehicle.
The proposal could see a sharp rise in the custodial sentence, whose average in 2015 was just four years for death by careless or dangerous driving, the concern for campaigners is that the law will not change for careless drivers.
It's important that the punishment fits the crime, to serve a few years in prison for taking a life through dangerous driving does not fit the crime and the sentencing needs to change. A precedent will need to be set for those that take a life because they are using a mobile phone; we can all see the level of danger displayed by those that race through our streets, are high on drugs or have consumed excessive alcohol, as these are socially unaccepted, using a mobile phone whilst driving hasn't yet become as socially unacceptable despite the obvious dangers and whilst landmark sentencing will help, we need better education, use of technology and police detection to minimise the risk of death caused by phone use.
The lesser offence of careless driving will come under close scrutiny, with many calling for this to be scrapped.
