Family law solicitors advise on legal issues arising at the beginning, during, or at the end of a relationship. They can help resolve disputes concerning separation, divorce, children, finances, property and personal protection.

- financial settlements;
- property and pension disputes;
- child arrangements;
- parental responsibility;
- child maintenance;
- domestic abuse;
- adoption and special guardianship;
- care proceedings involving social services;
- cohabitation agreements and disputes;
- pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements;
- civil partnerships;
- surrogacy; and
- other family court proceedings.
Family law does not generally cover unrelated matters involving wider family members, such as wills, probate or elderly client law, although some firms provide these services through separate departments.
Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse can include physical violence, threats, harassment, controlling or coercive behaviour, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and financial abuse.
A family solicitor can advise on urgent protective measures, including:
- a non-molestation order to protect a person or child from abuse or harassment;
- an occupation order determining who may live in or enter the family home;
- a domestic abuse protection order where available;
- urgent child arrangements;
- protection from forced marriage; and
- legal aid eligibility.
There is no court fee for applying for a non-molestation or occupation order. Urgent applications may be possible without first notifying the other person when immediate protection is required.
