How to change your name.
Many people find that they wish to change their name, this can be for any number of reasons, many famous celebrities have done so, for example Ethel Gumm changed to Judy Garland, Peter Hernandez changed to Bruno Mars, and even though he is famous for saying,'my name is Michael Cain' it is actually Maurice Joseph Micklewhite.
In the real world the most common reason is because of a marriage, breakdown of a marriage or civil partnership.
The truth is that you don't have to adopt a legal process to change your name but you will if you would like to change your name on any official documents such as a passport or driving license.
To change your name legally you will need a deed poll, you can obtain the official form from the Ministry of Justice web site, contact a solicitor, generally choose a solicitor that can help with family matters for this, or you can produce your own deed poll.
If you are changing your name because you are getting married you do not need a deed poll, you will need to send a letter and your certificate of marriage or partnership to the record holders and your name will be changed for free, this does not apply if you want to change to a double barrelled surname.
In the situation that you have got divorced or ended a civil partnership, you should be able to change your name back by producing your decree absolute/final order and marriage/civil partnership certificate; there is of course a caveat and that is some organizations will not let you change your name.
