New animal cruelty Laws
The new laws covering animal cruelty have bite!
The Environment Secretary has announced an increase in the punishments covering animal cruelty laws, this follows a number of recent cases when judges have said they would like to have handed out greater sentences but did not have the option to do so.
It is hoped that the new plans give the courts the flexibility to impose much tougher sentencing, and act as a deterrent to those considering acts of cruelty including those involved in organised animal fights.
The courts are presently restricted to a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment and an unlimited fine, the new sentencing allows the courts to impose a maximum sentence of five years and brings us in line with some of the toughest animal cruelty laws in the world.
The changes have been welcomed by all charities involved with animal welfare.
