Stalking Victims to get quicker protection

The government has recognised the need to protect victims of stalking more quickly; the Home Secretary has announced new orders enabling action to be taken at the earliest possible moment.

The new order brings stalking victims in line with the protection given to domestic violent victims, and failure to comply with the order will be a criminal offence carrying a maximum custodial sentence of five years, the order can be applied for through the courts before the suspect has been arrested.

The standard order will prevent the suspect from contacting the victim through any means and will state that they cannot go near the person.

Orders can vary depending on the nature of the complaint and can include the need for treatment or counselling.

The move has been welcomed by the National Stalking Helpline, which was set up by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust in 2010.

The new measures follow the recognition of stalking as a criminal offence in its own right in 2012.

The figures relating to stalking show the need for such measures

• 20% of women and 10% of men will be affected by stalking
• The police have recorded over 4000 cases of stalking in the past 12 months, an increase of over 30%

If you are a victim of stalking the National helpline can be contacted on 0808 802 0300
But contact the police if you feel you are in any danger.
