Making a Drug Legal.
Most medical researchers agree that cannabis is a wonder drug but it is estimated that over 10,000 people break the law to administer it, despite a recent, all party Parliamentary Group, recommending that the government reform the drug laws, the home office says it has no plans to legalise the drug, why?
The all-party group has recommended that herbal cannabis is reclassified to a schedule four drug, cannabis, or the derivative of cannabis, takes many forms and this classification is called for on Herbal cannabis.
The reclassification would allow doctors to prescribe the drug and even permit patients to grow limited amounts.
At present the Law in England and Wales outlaws cannabis, and anyone taking the drug even for Medicinal reasons can be prosecuted, facing years in jail and a substantial fine.
Perhaps the fact that the Health Service warns that taking the drug can be harmful is the reason there is no desire to undertake the research and development needed to comply with approval rules.
The Parliamentary Group has viewed evidence from patients that have used the drug, the medical profession and countries where the drug is used legally, and assessed the risks and benefits of use.
There is very strong evidence that taking cannabis will help several conditions from back pain to Nausea and Multiple Sclerosis, there is also moderate and weak evidence that it could help many other conditions.
Taking the drug does have some short-term side effects and, in some cases of prolonged use from a young age, there is a link to schizophrenia, but in a very small number of cases.
However, in conclusion Prof Barnes said that over 20,000 scientific and medical reports had been studied and, 'cannabis does have medical benefit', which contradicts the governments present classification as a B class drug.
The home office point to a substantial amount of evidence to show that the drug is harmful, and that drugs need to be trialled thoroughly.
That all seems logical, the drug companies need to crack on and develop the drug for market, or perhaps the huge cost and the existing ease of availability will mean that the drugs companies have no commercial interest in its development; perhaps that's a cynical view of the commercial drugs market.
11 European countries allow cannabis for medical use, 24 states in America and many other countries around the world.
The body of evidence is that cannabis can help, but for some reason it's not legalised for medical use, my guess is money could be that reason? I know that if someone I love were undergoing chemo and struggling with nausea, for example then if cannabis would help them, I would want them to have access to it.
We need to get this back into perspective, the call is to allow doctors to prescribe herbal cannabis, not legalise the drug for 'recreational' use.
Cannabis is a drug with a different set of circumstances to other drugs, and perhaps should be given different consideration.
