Assisted dying.

Lord Falconer has submitted a private members bill which would legalise assisted dying in some cases: he has said only a small change would be needed, that said a fundamental one!
The bill, which has had a second reading in the House of Lords, will allow doctors to prescribe a lethal dose to terminally patients judged to have less than six months to live.
The Bill does not have backing by the government and is therefore unlikely to become Law, but it is a useful barometer to measure the popularity for change on one of the most emotive of subjects.
The Prime Minister remains unconvinced about change.
The Bill will allow a patient of capable mind to request the procedure; they would have to meet strict safeguard controls, backed up by the agreement of two doctors that the decision was informed.
There are very strong arguments to introduce assisted dying. The Church of England has changed it's stance, stating that assisted dying is compatible with Christian views, stating that when suffering is so great and the request has been made, the denial of a compassionate dignified end does not sit well with Christian values.
Whilst it is a very emotive factor the ground swell of opinion is in favour of allowing assisted dying in some cases, and it is a matter of time until a Bill is put before parliament with a free vote. The private bill before the House of Lords will be an interesting indicator for any future Bill.
