Legal Gender rules
The rules are to be reconsidered for how your legal gender can be changed, making it easier.
The existing rules state that you must be diagnosed with dysphoria, which is a condition where your appearance and your biological sex do not match.
This has been criticised as being too intrusive, which it is.
The existing laws are covered in the 2004 Gender Recognition Act and states that anyone that wants to change their legal sex needs to apply for a certificate of recognition, which is issued buy a judicial body, the evidence that is considered is the diagnosis of dysphoria and confirmation that the applicant has been in transition for at least two years.
Around 500 people apply to change their gender each year, and whist the existing Act is not very old, it does need updating; the consultation for this will take place from the autumn.
The Government is committed to eradicating prejudices from the statute books.
It is hoped that this review will remove the judicial panel and the need for medical evidence replaceing it with a simple administrative process.
